Closure seminar on assistive technology

Razzett tal-Hbiberija’s first EU co-funded project, the “Inclusice ICT Training and Development Programme”, is coming to a close after a busy and successful year since its launch. The programme aims at bridging the gap between disability and full ICT use, through a wide range of assistive technology devices and specialised adaptive techniques.

In order to share the work and results of the project with other professions in the field and the general public, a Closure Seminar was held at the Hilton’s Portomaso Suite in February.

Two foreign speakers were invited to share their experience in similar projects held in the UK.  Ms. Caroline Gray is an Occupational Therapist by profession and is the Director of the Ace Centre in Sussex, UK which offers consultancy services on the use of Assistive Technologies and Communication Aids.  Mr. Richard Allcroft offers first-hand advice to freshly injured patients at the Stanmore Spinal Unit through Aspire Centre.  His presentation included both his personal experience with assistive technologies as a tetraplegic, as well as his experience as a peer counsellor within the Aspire Centre. 

Amongst the local speakers were Mr. Nathan Farrugia, CEO for Razzett tal-Hbiberija and Ms. Graziella Camilleri, Project Coordinator and Trainer for the “Inclusive ICT Training and Development Project” at Razzett gave an overview of the assessment and training processes involved in this programme.

Ms. Lidwina Schembri Wismayer, Head of Physical Disability Programmes at Razzett, highlighted the various physical, social and mental boundaries faced by those individuals with a disability, and how overcoming these boundaries may lead to an independent and fulfilling life within the society.
