Gozo Channel, which provides the ferry service between the islands of
Malta and Gozo, registered Lm282,000 in profit for the financial year ending September 2006. The company’s profit increased by 3% over that of 2005, it emerged on Friday.
During a press conference addressed by Minister for Investment, Industry and information Technology Austin Gatt and Gozo Channel Chairman Joe Borg it was also revealed that the company’s vessels partook in a total of 19,209 voyages during the period under review, up by 2.2% over the previous year.
Minister Gatt also explained how the number of passengers carried last year remained on the same level of that of 2006 at just over 3.5 million.
In turn, the total number of vehicles transported between the two islands was of 937,138.
Gozo Channel registered consecutive losses for a number of years up until 2005 after the company was reformed. The company’s worst year was 2003 when it lost Lm988,554. The following year was also marked by further losses; however these were lowered to Lm10, 046. In turn, in 2005 the ferry service company made a profit of Lm273,150.
