Low-cost carrier Germanwings launched its flights to and
from
Malta on Tuesday afternoon
as two aeroplanes landed at
Malta
International
Airport
from
Cologne and
Stuttgart, half an hour apart.
The company, which will be operating two flights a week from
each city, is expected to bring 13,000 tourists to
Malta this year. Germanwings is the
third low cost airline to fly to and from
Malta, along with Ryanair and
Meridiana.
Between November 2006 and February 2007 Ryanair initiated its
operations with flights from Luton in
England,
Pisa in
Italy
and
Dublin in
Ireland
and it is expected to bring 90,000 visitors to
Malta. A further 6,000 will arrive aboard
the Italian Meridiana low cost carrier.
In turn, in the recent days, national airline Air
Malta announced that it will be increasing the number
of flights to
Munich, Frankfurt,
Dusseldorf and
Berlin in
Germany;
Birmingham
and Stansted in
England and
Rome in
Italy.
Minister for Tourism and Culture Francis Zammit Dimech said
he is satisfied that low cost carrier Germasnwings has started operating
flights to and from
Malta.
“The Germanwings flights along with more AirMalta flights
are to resolve problems Malta faced last year when a large number of German
tourists could not visit the country because of a shortage of flights,”
explained the Minister, adding that the German market, as the second largest for
Maltese tourism, will now continue to expand.
