As from Monday, Malta International Airport will commence works on the partial re-surfacing of Runway 32/14 as part of the general upgrading programme on airside that MIA is undertaking to execute in different phases during the coming years. This re-surfacing work is expected to be completed by mid-December 2007.

Runway 32/14 is the larger of the two runways at MIA and is used by 80% of all aircraft movements and therefore the works on Runway 32/14 had to commence after the peak summer months.  The other Runway, 24/06, will remain open but due to its limitations in length and the prevailing wind conditions, its use is rather restricted.  Resurfacing works will therefore take place during the night ending by early each morning when the runway will be re-opened for the normal daytime operations.

MIA will do its utmost so that the works will cause minimum disruption to the normal operations of the airport, all passengers and the general public.

The re-surfacing works of Runway 32/14 are commencing on schedule and the project is estimated to cost Lm 0.8 million (€ 1.86 million).  This is part of a larger project which MIA is implementing and also includes the widening of taxiways and the construction of new ones to increase aircraft movements capacity in the coming years.  The works on the taxiways are planned to commence in January 2008 and this part of the airfield infrastructure upgrading program is being co-financed by the European Union, under the TEN-T Non-MIP Call of 2005.
