In his address to the annual meeting of the Association of European Vehicle and Driver Registration Authorities, new transport minister Dr Austin Gatt, said that it is high time that Malta looked at alternative means of transport and that Malta’s general dependency on cars is not to be attributed to any cultural inclinations. The minister stated that “the quality of the air we breathe cannot be the price for the quality of our trip to work and back."

Dr Gatt also said that when it comes to services relating to cars, registrations and licensing “we will be abolishing altogether the need of a central front office freeing up our central resources to do better back office work and improve the service we give the public.”

Road networks were another topic the minister touched upon saying that Malta’s roads will need to be brought up to European-class which translates into safe, reliable and good quality. This will have to be developed in parallel to the new means of transport that the country needs to move towards.
