Public transport workers have commenced an indefinite strike on Monday morning following a government announcement last week saying that the hearses sector is to be liberalized.

The ministry has already issued two statements that it will not be conditioned by threats by the Federation of Transport Operators and called the protest immoral.

Transport minister Austin Gatt has stated that the monopoly which this industry enjoys is not in the interest of the consumer and therefore, some sectors had to be liberalized. This decision was final, Gatt had said.
