Transport Minister Austin Gatt has launched a document proposing public transport reform within the context of environmental sustainability.

Dr Gatt presented the document to the press on Wednesday afternoon, saying that the real measure of success of public transport was not the lack of complaints about the service but the level of patronage.

Gatt stated that the reform, to be subsidized by government,  aimed at making public transport a better alternative to private transport by 2015. Moreover, public transport will have to have energy-efficient vehicles.

He also said that public transport services should be offered on a 24 hour basis and these are to include trams alongside the buses, taxis and ferries currently available. Viability studies for introduction of two tram lines are still underway, the minister said.

Dr Gatt said the ADT was drafting a new network for bus routes which will soon be presented to the ATP for discussion.
