Alitalia is not guaranteeing it will operate any flights as from Monday due to lack of fuel. The airline’s crisis will have various implications for the main airports at Rome and Milan. Cancellation of flights will also have an effect locally as Alitalia flies daily to Malta.

Alitalia special administrator Augusto Fantozzi said that no one wants to supply the airline with kerosene and that jobs dismissals will have to take place if none of the nine Alitalia unions reach an accord. Meanwhile, demonstrations by Alitalia employees continue.

Back in April, plans for Alitalia to be bought by Air France-KLM collapsed due to the fact that the unions rejected the conditions.

Currently, the only offer is from Italian consortium CAI, which only wants Alitalia's profitable operations.

Emergency talks have resumed on Sunday between government officials, unions and others with the former hoping unions will back down to avoid bankruptcy and the loss of nearly 20,000 jobs.

PM Silvio Berlusconi has promised he will do his utmost to save the airline. The Italian government owns 49.9 percent of Alitalia.
