In this age of heightened eco-awareness, many businesses are trying to do their part in fighting the impact industrial activity has on climate change, through research, awareness and various initiatives and events. The Tourism Industry is no less aware of its impact on the environment.
In recognition of this, the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has dedicated the 2008 World Tourism Day (WTD) on the 27th September, to the theme of ‘Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change’.
Due to its growing importance as a global economic activity, a 2008 UNWTO study on “Climate Change and Tourism: Responding to Global Challenges”, estimates that tourism generates around 4.9% of global carbon emissions. The UNWTO estimate took into consideration the main activities involved in a trip, including air and surface transport, accommodation and a range of other activities normally indulged in by travellers.
In view of this the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) together with various stakeholders from the Industry, has set up a programme of events and initiatives to mark this day. Two brochures have been produced for distribution to hotels, one aimed at the hotel management and staff, and the other for hotel guests.
On the 27th September, the “34U” tree-planting scheme is being launched for tourists as well, by the MTA in conjunction with the Ministry for Resources and Rural Development. Hotels are being encouraged to switch off all balcony lights from midnight until dawn on September 26/27 as a sign of good will to participate in energy saving measures. Various other activities for PR purposes are being organised to heighten the awareness of the issue of climate change.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario De Marco is giving an address on the day on TVM at 19.00hrs and also issued in the local press. Another initiative is a conference on Friday 26th September in conjunction with the Malta Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies Association (M.E.E.R.E.A), which is being held at the Le Meridien Hotel and Spa, St. Julians at 14.30CET. Tourists arriving in Malta on the day between 13.00CET and 19.00CET will be offered a welcome drink, kindly supplied by Simonds Farsons Cisk.
The events will end with a concert in Bugibba Square, with the participation of local bands Cash & Band (a Pink Floyd tribute band) and Sourberry, culminating with a performance by the ex-front man of Marillion - Fish. In order to allow better enjoyment of the concert, the Bugibba seafront will be pedestrianised whilst the MTA is organising the park and ride system from Sirens Football Pitch between 18.30hrs and 24.00hrs.
