A scheme, through which drivers will be charged to enter
Valletta,
has been postponed by "a couple of weeks", a spokesman for the Roads
Ministry told The Times of
Malta.
The scheme, which was meant to come into force on Thursday, has been delayed a
second time after it was originally meant to come into force in January.
The delay will enable the operator of the scheme to subject it to some
changes. The changes were not disclosed and a new introduction date is yet to
be revealed, reported further the newspaper.
When the scheme starts operating, motorists will be charged 35c for every
hour they remain in
Valletta,
up to a maximum charge of Lm2.80 a day. The first half hour will not be subject
to a fee.
Entry into
Valletta
will be monitored through cameras that will record the entry and exit times of
each vehicle.
The scheme will replace the V licence system. Coupled up with the Park and
Ride scheme, it is expected to reduce traffic flows through Floriana into
Valletta by up to 50%. Motorists
whose V licence expires after the scheme comes into force will be given pro
rata credit to be used for access into the city.
