Transport ministry reacts to fresh threats of strike

The Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Communications has said that the federation of transport operators should know that Government will not be conditioned by threats when it is drafting policies.
Threats of industrial action by this federation were reportedly published after minister Austin Gatt announced the liberalization of parts of the transport sector, including hearses.
In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said that monopolies are to be avoided except when the consumers stand to benefit.
The statement concluded by saying that no operator and no sector which previously enjoyed protection could expect to have a veto on initiatives made in the interest of users.
