Inbound tourism increases by 1.2%

Inbound tourists in August 2008 are estimated to have increased by 1.2 % when compared to the same month in 2007. Year on year, total nights spent decreased by 0.4% according to statistics published by the National Statistics Office.

According to the ongoing frontier survey, tourist departures in August are estimated at 178,570, implying an increase of 1.2 % over the same month in 2007.

Hotel occupancy nosedives in July

In July bed-place occupancy in collective accommodation establishments went down by 5.3 percentage points when compared to the corresponding month last year, according to estimates published by the National Statistics Office on Friday.

In July 2008, total nights spent in collective accommodation establishments were recorded at 1,014,582, a decrease of 8.1 per cent over the corresponding month in 2007, with the largest drop being registered in the 3-star hotel category. In the month under review, the average length of stay stood at 7.5 nights.

World Tourism Day to be celebrated on September 27

The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has dedicated the 2008 World Tourism Day (WTD) on the 27th September, to the theme of ‘Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change’.

In view of this the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) together with various stakeholders from the Industry, has set up a programme of events and initiatives to mark this day.

Tony Coleiro appointed fellow by tourism institutions

Tony Coleiro has been elected Fellow by two of the leading International Institutions, Tourism and Hospitality oriented. Both Institutions will be looking upon the possibility to open their Chapter in Malta and Gozo.

The Association of Tourism and Hospitality Executives (ATHE) was formed as a 'not for profit' company in 2006. ATHE is an association of training centres who provide accredited courses throughout the world either by attendance at a centre or by distance learning directly with ATHE in the UK.

Decrease in cruise liner passengers in August

In August 2008, cruise passenger traffic in Malta comprised 76,646 persons, a decrease of 4.4% over the comparative month in 2007 according to estimates published by the National Statistics Office on Monday.

On the other hand, between January and August, total cruise passenger traffic in Malta amounted to 346,750, an increase of 14.4 %over the same period last year.

Londoners celebrate Malta Day

Hundreds of Maltese resident in the United Kingdom congregated in London last Saturday to celebrate the seventh edition of Malta Day.

The programme of events, organized by the Malta High Commission and a number of UK-based Maltese organizations, included a traditional Maltese fair complete with stalls selling Malta-made pottery and glass, filigree ornaments, as well as traditional Maltese food.
