This year MADC will once again come bearing gifts of pure theatrical gold with its latest Christmas offering. ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’, which promises to be bigger and better than ever before because it’s been ‘no holds barred’ from concept to finish.
The MADC have taken all the successful elements of previous pantomimes and rolled them all into this musical extravaganza. Steve Casaletto has once again taken on the ardent task of directing his motley cast of around thirty-five. Costume designer John Williams will be making sure there are enough dazzling sequins and passaperla in each and every costume.
Musical director Mro Paul Abela, together with a live orchestra, is bound to have people tapping their feet in time to the music, choreographer Kristina Schranz will be leading the chorus in a number of energetic dance numbers and the lavish sets will be designed by Harry Borg. Stage manager Lino Mallia will be supervising all backstage departments, while wardrobe mistress, Nella Meadows has the daunting task of converting John’s designs into real costumes.
The cast itself is a force to be reckoned with: Alexandra Camilleri Warne graces the stage as Snow White, Coryse Borg is the evil stepmother and Francesca Briffa sprinkles her magic as the panto fairy, Jean Pierre Agius is the Mirror, while Rachel Darmanin Demajo and Kris Spiteri double up as the bumbling henchmen and panto comics. Chris Camilleri is Prince Charming and Ralph Mangion is the hapless King Klooless.
Of course, one cannot but also mention the 20-strong chorus made up of all-singing, all-dancing young people who manage to look good even when dressed up in the most outrageous (and sometimes, uncomfortable!) costumes!
Last but certainly not least, this year’s pantomime will see panto-legend Alan Montanaro back in tights and a fibre-grass bra as this year’s glamorous dame. He is also the writer of ‘Snow White’ so the audience can expect any number of hilarious scenes replete with Alan’s notorious double entendres.
‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ will take place at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta on the 26 – 30 December 2004, 2 – 9 January 2005 and 12 – 16 January 2005 (no shows on the 10th and 11th January 2005).
