Maltese new High Commissioner for Cyprus sustained Malta’s support to the country and encouraged a reunification of the Cypriot island through the establishing of a new bizonal and bicommunal federation.
Saviour John Balzan, Malta’s new H.C. for Cyrus (based in Athens) stated this as he presented his credentials to Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos.
He explained how Malta will “continue to exhort and encourage both communities in Cyprus to make another effort at reconciling their differences and reach a just and functional conclusion''. He also assured that ''our support for your country will remain steadfast''.
The Maltese diplomat sustained that divisions in the country are highly unfortunate and that the fact that a new reunification, based on the policy of a new bizonal and bicomunal federation, has not yet been reached is deeply regrettable. Such state would be “just and acceptable to both communities” said Commissioner Balzan.
Receiving the credentials, President Papadopoulos assured that ''the government of Cyprus remains committed to a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation ensuring the smooth and effective functioning of the state,'' and noted that he very much looks forward to his visit to Malta which is set to take place this week.
