Electoral events always translate into a lot of work for journalists, and the year 2003 did not leave Maltese journalists and broadcasters scraping the barrel's end for news.

On March 8th there was the referendum on whether Malta should join the European Union and six weeks later, on April 12, the general elections were held, a few months before the expiry of the term. Both results confirmed Malta would be joining the European Union in 2004.

While in 2002 Malta was just inches away from winning the Eurovision Song Contest, the 2003 edition witnessed one of the worst results ever obtained by Malta in this competition.

Towards the end of the year the government presented its annual Budget, provoking a wave of criticism from almost every sector of society following the stringent measures announced.

It was also the year when MaltaMedia's Editor-in-chief, Martin Debattista, won the e-journalism category of the Malta Journalism Awards.
