The cabinet convened at Catsille, Valletta, on Monday in order to discuss and approve a National Policy document concerning illegal immigration. The adoption of the policy comes about in preparation for the National Conference to be held in January 2005. Discussions are in progress.

Last October, the party in Opposition, the Malta Labour Party (MLP), led by leader Dr. Alfred Sant called on the government to develop a policy with regards to the issue. At the time, Dr. Sant explained how he believed that the issue of illegal immigration was to some extent being overlooked and not being awarded the proper attention it deserves. He also insisted that the phenomenon of illegal immigration is damaging to the Maltese sectors, namely economy and national security.

Dr. Alfred Sant insisted that the plan should be constructed in a manner which respects and sees to both the rights of Maltese citizens and the legislations involving international human rights.

It seems that the government has taken up the request of MLP and is discussing the matter in cabinet on Monday morning.
