New Digital Television operators Multiplus Ltd will be on the Maltese market shortly, once permission is granted by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA). Multiplus Ltd will be using wireless Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) network. The MCA should be granting permission for operation by the first week of May.
Equipment has been installed and the company was given test frequencies just two weeks ago. The company should be granted to utilize the frequencies for commercial purposes by MCA in the upcoming months. Although the company has stated that it would like to start operating between February and March 2005, the MCA have until the first days of May 2005 to award authorization.
In a press conference on Wednesday, the company's chief executive officer Mr. Jan Spiteri and general manager Mr. Anton Attard, stated that their aim is offer an assortment of superior-quality and cost-effective digital services. Mr. Attard also explained that the service, besides being open to all and cost-effective will also produce clients with an alternative to cables and large satellite dishes by offering a small box decoder and antenna. These will upgrade the current analogue television sets to digital format and hence allow them to receive the DTTV signal. Additionally, the antenna will only need to be purchased by those who do not already have an aerial on their roof.
Advantages of DTTV include an increased provision of television channels, interactivity through television which is somewhat similar to internet and enhanced information at levels both local and international.
