The use of broadband internet and mobile phones has been always on the rise in the last few years. In fact, broadband connections grew by 37% since the start of the year and now stand at over 31,000, whilst active mobile subscribers increased to 298,326.

This has been clearly indicated by the fifth edition of the Electronic Communications Market Review report issued by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) on Thursday. This document covers the period between April and September 2004.

The report gives an overview of the trends in local mobile telephony services, fixed telephony, Internet (broadband and narrowband) and cable television markets. It features an enhanced section that highlights the contribution of the communications industry to the general Maltese economy. Comparisons and benchmarks with EU member states on a number of wholesale and retail services are also included in the report. Another new and interesting section covers SMS usage and prices in Malta and how these compare with other countries in the European Union.

The MCA’s Electronic Communications Market Review is published twice yearly with the next publication covering the period October 2004 to March 2005 slated for publication during May 2005.
