8 Maltese citizens still missing in SE Asia

The number of Maltese citizens who are not yet located in South-East Asia went down to eight, six in Thailand and two in India. On Wednesday morning, the total number of Maltese who were hit by the natural disaster increased to 135. Four women and a man are still being treated in various Thailand hospitals.

Next Sunday two donation points will be organised, one in Maria Regina school in Blata l-Bajda and the other in the secondary school of Victoria. The most requested items are blankets, tents, tinned food and medicine.

The ministry is still inviting those people who need information about their relatives who were in Asia in the past days, to call on 79003879 or 79476382.

BBC news reported that the Red Cross has said that the number of dead from Sunday is likely to rise above 100,000. Moreover, the United Nations health agency has warned could double the death toll since the disaster zone is now threatened with outbreaks of disease.

So far, 68,000 people have been confirmed dead.

The 9.0 magnitude quake happened just off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early on Sunday and set off huge waves that reached as far as Africa.

BBC also said that India is expected to install an early warning system to predict tsunamis.

The President of Malta, Dr Edward Fenech Adami expressed Malta’s sympathy to the Heads of State of the nine Asian countries suffering from the disaster of the earthquake and the tsunamis, which have claimed the lives of thousands of victims.

In the messages of condolences, the President said that he is confident that the spirit of perseverance of every Head of State and the strong character of the nations effected by this tragic moment, together with the solidarity of the international community, will assist in overcoming the suffering wrought by this natural phenomenon.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi also sent letters of condolences to to the Heads of State of India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
