    Malta's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest final was once again Chiara, who had obtained the third place in Birmingham in 1998. The big question was whether she could get a better placing in Kiev. She did, but once again Malta failed to clinch the top-spot.

    Malta Budget 2006President Fenech Adami signs the budget presented by Prime Minister Gonzi and Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech

    The third budget speech of the 10th legislature, the 2nd one of Malta as a member of the European Union and the 2nd one of Prime Minister Gonzi, who is also the Minister of Finance, was presented on the surcharge on utility bills was raised from 17% to 55% and the price of petrol also increased. The government presented its annual Budget on Monday October 31 2005, a few weeks before the usual time because of the up-coming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

    is the new bishop of Gozo. The former parish priest of Kercem succeeds Nikol Cauchi who resigned after reaching the age of 75. Bishop Cauchi served as head of the Gozo diocese for 38 years.

    Sea Malta privatisation saga
    Sea MaltaThe Maltese Government moved ahead with its plans to privatise Sea Malta, the national sea cargo carrier, on the premise that it could not be commercially sustained. The whole process degenerated into a political saga, with the Sea Malta being liquidated rather than privatised and 144 workers losing their jobs. The prospective buyers in the meantime set-up a new company to take over Sea Malta's job.
