United States Ambassador for Malta Molly Bordonaro and Nike Senior Executive Howard Slusher thanked the staff of Malta Customs for its diligence in detecting counterfeit goods. The past year has been a fruitful one for the Malta Customs, where authorities seized over 20 containers of counterfeit merchandise. Additionally, in May 2005, Malta Customs took the lead in the European Union's Operation FAKE.

During Ambassador Bordonaro and Howard Slusher's visit on Tuesday, Customs employees demonstrated how the Vehicle and Container Inspection System (VACIS), donated to the customs by the US, scans containers selected for scanning by the Customs Containers Monitoring Unit and detects illicit goods.
Mr.Slusher who works closely with Nike founder and CEO Phil Night, highlighted the outstanding efforts of Customs employees. Slusher emphasized that the success of Malta Customs help to support free enterprise, creativity and ingenuity of individuals and companies around the world.
The U.S.Embassy in Malta donated the VACIS equipment to Malta Customs in 2004 primarily to counter the proliferation of illicit weapons and weapons systems where some successes have also been registered. The equipment has been highly successful in detecting shipments of counterfeited goods. Customs officials noted that in the last two years, over 380,000 Nike products have been confiscated by Customs Officers.
