Gainfully occupied population increases

Labour market data for March 2006, provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), indicate that the figure of the labour supply increased by 361 persons over the same month in the preceding year.

The gainfully occupied population increased by 686 persons, whereas the registered unemployed decreased by 325 persons over the comparable month in the preceding year.

In this way, the labour supply stood at 145,841 in March 2006 as compared to 145,480 in March 2005. This was distributed as follows: the gainfully occupied population amounted to 138,148, whereas the registered unemployed amounted to 7,693.

A report issued by the National Statistics Office (NSO) In March 2006, the gainfully occupied population increased by 686 persons as compared to March 2005. In this context, a growth in employment occurred in construction by 327 persons; wholesale trade by 186 persons; recreational, cultural and sporting activities by 163 persons; and manufacture of radio, television, and communication equipment by 150 persons. On the other hand, the level of full-time employment went down in textile manufacturing by 563 persons; clothing manufacturing by 354 persons; and, retail trade by 171 persons.

In the month under review, the persons in part-time employment increased by 3,335 as compared to March 2005. This figure is divided into those who hold a part-time employment as a primary occupation at 2,023 persons and the others who hold their part-time employment as their secondary occupation at 1,312 persons.

In March 2006, persons in full-time self-employment amounted to 16,299. This denotes an increase of 134 persons in full-time self-employment over the comparable month in the preceding year. Many of this rise in self-employment occurred in the construction sector by 64 persons and wholesale trade by 40 persons. On the other hand, the number of self-employed persons engaged in retail trade dropped by 112 persons over the twelve months to March 2006.

Regional data for March 2006 indicates that the gainfully occupied population amounted to 129,783 and 8,365 in Malta and Gozo respectively.
