Malta ranks 39th on Global Competitiveness Index

Malta's economy has ranked as the thirty-ninth most competitive in the world according to a Global Competitiveness Index 2006-2007. Last year, Malta ranked forty-fourth.

Malta obtained the highest placement where technological development is concerned, occupying the twenty-second place on a global comparison. In turn, Malta's macro economy was the competitiveness factor to place lowest coming in at the seventy-sixth place.

Switzerland’s economy was found to be the most competitive, ranking first, followed by Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Singapore. The United States of America’s economy competitiveness, which occupied the top spot for several years, lost five places shift down to the sixth place.

The competitiveness of most European Union countries remained stable. While Poland’s economy competitiveness was found to be the weakest, ranking forty-eight, Germany came in eighth in the index.

The Global Competitiveness Index provides a holistic overview of critical factors tied to productivity and competitiveness. In the collection of data particular attention is given to nine sectors of the economy, namely the county’s institutions, infrastructure, macro economy, healthcare and primary education, advanced education and training, market efficiency, technological development, commerce sophistication and innovation.
