Maltese registered online gaming companies are not expected to experience any immediate negative impact vis-ŕ-vis a new law passed in the United States of America (US) prohibiting US citizens’ access to online gambling. The law, which is expected to be endorsed by US President George W Bush within the next two weeks, prohibits US banks and credit card companies from transferring funds to online gaming operators.

The move could lure betting companies in the US to Europe, and according to sources from the Official Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA), ten requests from companies interested in moving to Malta have already been made. In turn, out of 200 online betting companies registered in Malta, only one has its client base entirely made up of US gamblers.

According to maltaStar the move could lure betting companies in the US to Europe, and according to sources from the Official Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA), ten requests from companies interested in moving to Malta have already been made. In turn, out of 200 online betting companies registered in Malta, only one has its client base entirely made up of US gamblers.

However, maltaStar believes that there could be a catch, with European countries being encouraged to pass a prohibitory law similar to that of the US Senate. In this light, the LGA said that “It is a possibility”.

The online gaming companies registered in Malta employ over 650 workers in Malta, with an annual turnover of over Lm2 billion.
