Internet subscriptions up by 2.9% in September

Internet subscriptions rose by 2.9 % as at end September 2006. Narrowband and broadband subscriptions were recorded at 58,236 and 36,512 respectively. In turn, the cable and digital television subscription index dropped by 0.3 %, reflecting a drop in cable analogue and an increase in digital technology use. In absolute terms, these subscriptions totaled 110,156.

In the reference period, an increase of 0.2 % was recorded in the mobile subscription index, the number of mobile telephone subscriptions reaching 344,839. Around 15.4 million minutes were consumed in mobile telephone networks, while those directed from mobile to fixed-line networks amounted to around 2.1 million.


In September 2006 the mobile communication traffic included around 38.1 million SMSs; 62,636 MMSs; and 12,307 WAPs. As at end September 2006, the fixed telephone subscription index was virtually unchanged over the previous month. Minutes consumed in fixed-line telephony on local calls amounted to around 46.1 million, with some 32.3 million minutes from residential lines and the rest from business premises lines. The international fixed-telephony traffic comprised 190,212 calls, equivalent to around 0.5 million minutes.

In the reference period, VOIP minutes were estimated at some 857,000. In absolute terms, pager subscriptions stood at 4,773.
