During the month of December Vodafone Malta Limited will be launching High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) giving customers even faster wireless data transfer speeds than 3G. HSDPA is up to five times faster than 3G and 40 times faster than 2G.
Speaking at the traditional Christmas lunch for the media, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hatem Dowidar, underscored the company’s successes over the year and explained the exciting new services that will be made available to Vodafone customers during the coming weeks.
“After the recent launch of 3G services, which to date is only available to Vodafone customers, I am pleased to announce the launch of HSDPA which is considered to be 3.5G. This is a ground-breaking achievement for Vodafone, and I’m sure this news will delight our customers who are already enjoying the benefits of 3G technology,” said Hatem Dowidar.
The first 3.5G mobile phone, the Motorola V1100 will be available from Vodafone Retail Outlets later this month, whilst the HSDPA Mobile Connect Card V740 is already available for sale from Vodafone. HSDPA will first be available in the Paceville area and the Malta International Airport.
Furthermore Mr Dowidar announced that during the second quarter of 2007, in addition to mobile telephony, Vodafone will be addressing the home market. Along with mobile and fixed broadband Vodafone will be offering other services for home users.
Whilst reviewing 2006 Mr Dowidar outlined two major milestones for Vodafone. The first important achievement for the company was its introduction to Malta of 3G technology. 3G has put the fun into mobile telephony with video calling and full track music downloads, including access to the latest songs by top local artists.
3G has also expanded the boundaries of the workplace because it permits reliable data downloads at super charged speed wherever the business takes you, be it in Malta or abroad in major European cities. Since the launch of the service in August, local 3G coverage is incrementally being extended and now includes Valletta, B’Kara, Hamrun, Sta Venera, Lower Iklin, Lija, Pembroke, Sliema, Paceville, Swieqi and the Airport.
Another important achievement was the launch of Malta’s first Corporate Responsibility Report. This is further evidence of Vodafone’s commitment to correct and transparent organizational behaviour at all levels.
“Vodafone has been leading the way in mobile technology since the first call in Malta on our network 16 years ago. We have consistently been introducing to the Maltese islands new technologies and new services. We are happy to close off 2006 with the launch of HSDPA, and with the launch of new, exciting services such as WiMax. 2007 promises to be another eventful year for Vodafone customers,” said Hatem Dowidar.
