Unemployment decreases in April

The labour supply in April 2006, increased by 543 persons over the same month in the preceding year. The gainfully occupied population was found to be made up of 138,325 persons, indicating an increase of 722 persons.
The registered unemployed decreased by 179 persons. Registered unemployed persons totaled to 7,537. 7,000 of these persons were listed on Part I of the unemployment register.
The National Statistics Office reported the increase after analyzing Labour market data for April 2006 provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC).
Full-time employment in the private sector increased by 2.1 per cent between April 2005 and the same month last year, while there was a net drop in full-time employment within the public sector of 1.7 per cent.
Among the sectors that accounted for the increase in employment in April 2006, the principal ones were construction, real estate, renting and business activities, and other community, social and personal service activities. Sectors registering drops in employment included manufacturing and agriculture. The drop in manufacturing employment concerned mainly the production of textiles, wearing apparel, leather goods and footwear, while employment in the manufacturing of radio, television and communication equipment and apparatus increased.
According to administrative sources, total part-time employment rose by 3,281 persons between April 2005 and April 2006, mainly on account of activity in the wholesale and retail trades, hotels and restaurants and other business services.
