Following the successful launch of generic Glimepiride in a number of European markets, Actavis Limited launched its product in Malta. Glimepiride is indicated for the treatment of diabetes, where the increased blood glucose cannot be adequately controlled by diet, physical exercise and weight reduction.
In a press release, the company explained that it has launched Glimepiride into a number of EU markets last December to coincide with the expiry of the originator’s patent.
During the first three months after the launch in December, more than 80 million tablets have been supplied to the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Malta. These will be followed by supplies to Iceland, Lithuania, Sweden and Poland during 2006.
After this successful launch, Actavis has decided to make the product available locally. Activis Limited emphasised that the advantage of this product is not simply the quality of the product itself, but also its competitive price.
The company’s Managing Director stated, “Glimepiride is the first product which has been fully developed, manufactured and launched from Malta, and this is therefore a milestone for the company.”
Actavis Limited, located in Bulebel, is a subsidiary of the Actavis Group, a multinational pharmaceutical organisation employing 10,000 people in 32 countries worldwide. The Maltese operation alone boasts a workforce of no less than 350 highly skilled employees.
