Opposition speaker for Internal affair Dr. Gavin Gulia expressed his concern over the illegal immigration issue in Malta during a General Committee meeting for Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs organized by the organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OCSE). During the meeting held recently in Brussels, Dr. Gulia stated that Malta’s human and technical resources are on the verge of crisis with the arrival of 900 illegal immigrants in the recent weeks. He added that he is disappointed that two years after Malta’s accession to the bloc, the European Union’s support is lacking.

He insisted that other much larger countries are finding more immediate support from the Union every time their frontiers are hit by an influx of illegal immigrants. The Malta Labour Party (MLP) speaker called on the OCSE to pressure the European Union EU into taking heeding Malta’s pleas for stronger support.

Dr. Gulia concluded by saying that although financial help is welcome, a strategy of burden sharing among different EU states according to their size would allow the burden of illegal immigration to be divided more justly.

In the recent weeks, Maltese authorities, including Foreign Minister Dr. Michael Frendo have repeatedly urged the EU to provide Malta with more aid in the light of several illegal immigrants reaching Maltese shores almost on a daily basis.
