A proposal to increase European Union (EU) funding for illegal immigration issues has received the support of the European Popular Party (EPP). The proposal was put forward by the Maltese Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Simon Busuttil, who forms part of the (EPP).
While expressing his satisfaction at the EPP’s stance, the MEP called on all EU members to do their part as well.
The MEP stated that the upcoming EU budget is the first step to tackle the illegal immigration problems. He added that illegal immigration is a priority not only for the EU member state of Malta but also for countries such as Italy and Spain. Simon Busuttil also expressed his hope that the Finnish Presidency will do its utmost to hear out countries affected by illegal immigration.
In turn, Maltese MEP David Casa stated that while the EU’s effort to combat illegal immigration is evident, problems tied to the issue are worsening. David Casa was speaking during an EPP meeting within the Justice and Civil Liberties Committee. He called for the introduction of a burden-sharing policy for illegal immigrants arriving in the EU.
