The European Parliament adopted a resolution on a common illegal immigration policy on Thursday. The resolution received 295 votes in favour, 271 against and 14 abstentions.
The resolution calls for financial solidarity between states of the European Union, where an emergency fund to tackle illegal immigration related issues will be created.
The resolution also makes reference to a regulation which states that the first country an illegal immigrant lands on will be his or her host. However Maltese Members of the European Parliament (MEP) are calling for a revision of this regulation.
The resolution will be presented to the Council of Europe and the European Commission for consideration in the upcoming days.
