An important amendment concerning illegal immigration was approved by the Budget Committee of the European Parliament on Wednesday. The amendment was proposed by Maltese Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Louis Grech, and proposes the creation of an agency responsible for immigration and asylum in Malta.

The agency is expected to be a powerful force and funds will be allocated specifically to see to the needs of the agency. The main aim of the agency is to research, coordinate work and provide information to state members concerning plans, developments and implementations of a common policy about illegal immigration.

The amendment is the first phase of a long process before a final decision is made.

Speaking of the amendment, Louis Grech said that “The agency is to be based in Malta a small member state of the European Union (EU) which was hit by illegal immigration in a disproportionate manner, to improve management of this alarming situation”.
