Malta will be getting an extra 55 million euro in EU funds in the coming seven years, PM Gonzi said during the ‘Europe Close to You’ debate with Opposition Leader Dr Alfred Sant in Freedom Square on Saturday morning. The total funds allocated now amount to 855 million euros.

On his part, Dr Alfred Sant said that a strategic plan is necessary to make good use of the funds.

“Experience shows that while our country would be awaiting a particular amount of funds, much less is in fact received,” Dr Sant said. He referred to 2005, when the government was planning to get Lm 20 million in funds and got Lm 2.7 million instead.

The government needs to attract other finances and not only EU funds, Dr Sant added, since some funds take time to make it to the government’s budget and thus delay projects.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi mentioned the consultation process in which the general public is being invited to express its views on the matter. He also invited the Opposition to take part in these consultations.
