Maltese citizens' average BMI highest in EU

On average, Maltese people have the highest Body Mass Index (BMI) in the European Union, according to a Eurobarometer survey. The average Body Mass Index (BMI) of a Maltese person is of 26.6. According to World Health Organization guidelines, anyone with a BMI of between 18.5 and 25 is a healthy weight. A BMI above 25 indicates one is overweight, while someone with a BMI over 30 is obese. Italians were found to have the lowest BMI at 24.3. BMI calculations are based upon ones weight in relation to their height.

In turn, Maltese were also reveled to be least inclined to go for a ten minute walk out of all EU citizens. Among all EU citizens, Maltese also seem to be the likeliest to believe that they eat is "very good" for their health. While 44% believe they eat "very good" for their health, a further 43% believe they eat "good".

Maltese were also found to be the shortest According people in Europe with the average Maltese person standing at a height of 164.9 cm. The EU average is 169.9cm, while the tallest people are Dutch, at 174.5cm.

34% of Maltese went on diet during the past year, with 10% claiming they were ordered to follow one on doctors’ orders. In the European Union, around one in every ten persons went on diet during the past 12 months.

The Eurobarometer survey was commissioned by the European Commission's Directorate General Health and Consumer Protection and was carried out Europe-wide in November. 500 Maltese respondents were selected to participate in the survey.
