At the Conference of Community and European Affairs Committees of Parliaments of the EU Chairpersons' (COSAC) meeting held in Vienna on February 20th a number of Parliaments from various countries requested to examine the draft regulation on the law applicable and the competent jurisdiction in cases of divorce. The Maltese Parliament, alongside the Austrian, Finnish, Irish, British, Dutch and Czech parliaments, requested to examine the EU divorce draft document which the European Commission is expected to adopt in July 2006 on grounds of subsidiarity.

According to Aggornat, this check of Commission's proposals by national parliaments is based on an arrangement in a protocol annexed to the Treaty of Amsterdam which allows parliaments to see whether subsidiarity is being respected.

The Czech, Finnish, Irish, British and Dutch parliaments have also requested to do a subsidiary check on the draft directive on completion of the internal market in postal services planned for November 2006.

The Maltese Parliament was represented by Member of Parliament Dr Jason Azzopardi.
