Monnaie de Paris has been awarded the contract for the minting of euro coins bearing the Maltese national side, announced the Central Bank of Malta on Friday.

National side of the Malta euro coinA contract with the Monnaie de Paris will be concluded in the coming weeks, following which an agreement will be entered into with the Commission of the European Communities through a Memorandum of Understanding that will allow a number of preparatory tasks to be carried out for the production of the Maltese euro coins.

The Monnaie de Paris is the State-owned mint that has been responsible for the minting of all French euro coins.

This preparatory phase, which will include the production of a certain quantity of test coins, should be completed by early 2007.

The second phase, which will consist of the mass production of the whole quantity of coins required for the changeover, will only start after Malta receives the formal approval from the EU Council of Ministers to adopt the euro.

The designs for the Maltese side of the euro coins have meanwhile been approved by the EU Commission. Some small changes have been carried out to the original designs selected by the public to make them conform fully to the Commission Recommendation on common guidelines for the national sides of euro circulation coins.

Earlier this year the Mint of Finland had been offered to produce Malta's Euro coins, according to the company’s Chief Executive Office (CEO) and President Raimo Makkonen. He had said that “The competition for Malta's euros may be resolved in the near future”.
