Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Tonio Borg and United States of America Ambassador Molly Bordonaro signed two treaties on Wednesday morning; one regarding reciprocal legal assistance for criminal matters and the other regarding matters of extradition between the two countries.

Speaking before the signing Dr. Borg said the two countries already had a treaty about extradition which was signed over 70 years ago and the time had come for this agreement to be revised, especially in view of developments in the area of organized crime. The new agreement focuses on cooperation between the two countries in fighting organized crime and terrorism.

Ambassador Bordonaro said that there is excellent cooperation between the countries and that these two treaties will help in strengthening these ties.

Present for the signings were the Parliamentary Secretary Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, Attorney General Dr. Silvio Camilleri, Permanent Secretariat for the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs Charles Deguara, Personal Assistant to the Minster of Justice and Home Affairs Joseph Scerri and officials from the American Embassy.
