On Saturday Malta Labour Party (MLP) presented a draft plan concerning education. Among the issues the plan addresses, fighting illiteracy is deemed the most important. Speaking during a press conference MLP and Opposition leader Dr. Alfred Sant stated that the plan is aimed at bettering the education sectors in both Malta and Gozo, adding that the party is concerned whether Malta’s educative system is managing to fulfill the Lisbon Strategy requirements.
With reference to the national curriculum, the action plan implies that this is to be adopted more thoroughly. In turn, Dr. Alfred Sant stated that the MLP is calling for a greater emphasis on science-related subjects and information technology. The plan also addresses upheaval the vocational sector which according to the MLP is currently not providing enough jobs to cater for the number of recognized practitioners and graduates. The plan also recognizes the importance of expanding the sector of education to incorporate trade schools. Although Dr. Sant explained that the plan is not calling for the re-opening of such schools, he deemed the setting up of trade-related courses as elementary for those who cannot keep up with current academic standards.
Speaking of the University of Malta, the plan states that there is a need for betterment in the areas of instruction and research especially in the science and information technology sectors. Dr. Sant claimed that University learning and hands-on experience in the working world should be bridged.
In turn, Main speaker for education Carmelo Abela stated that the main aim of the plan is to provide all students with a basic level of knowledge. For this to occur, Carmelo Abela added that the way primary schools are run is to be restructured at the levels of organization, instruction and assessment.
