The Mater Dei Hospital is expected to reach its final stages of completion in about a year’s time. The new hospital has been hailed as ‘state of the art’ by Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry of Finance Tonio Fenech. The hospital is expected to offer 4,000 jobs, as well as a more efficient and modern medical service to patients. There are currently 1,200 people working on the project.

Mr. Fenech highlighted a few of the measures undertaken and the progress made during the past five months during a press conference held on Friday 30 June.

Installation by MITTS in the Department of Information Technology could begin on Friday in order for it to be ready by September. Moreover the Concoures and Main Lobby of the hospital are in their final stages of completion, and when ready will incorporate the reception area, a restaurant and shops, offices for the Unions, and a Childcare Centre. The final design of the Chapel is also ready and the structural work is expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2007.

The tender regarding food for the patients has been given to the private enterprise, JSBZ, to maintain high standards of nutrition. In turn, last January Skanska Malta JV handed over the Outpatients Department to the FMS so that all furniture and medical equipment could be installed, a task that has now been completed. The Utility block of the Engineering Department has also been set up with all the necessary equipment, as have six halls of the Main Block.

All medical apparatus orders are proceeding nicely, with 46 million Euros worth of equipment ordered from a contract worth 62 million Euros. Until now 25 million Euros worth of this equipment has arrived.
