Malta was classified as the second European Union (EU) country to offer the best e-government services. This was announced in a press conference by Minister for Investment, Industry and Information technology on Monday. Last year, among 25 countries, Malta ranked the 16th place. According to a report published by EU consultants only Austria has been deemed to provide more efficient e-government services out of the 25 member states of the bloc.
The report published on an annual basis for the past six years awards points to each EU state. The latest report is the second in which Malta features.
Minister Austin Gatt stated that the achievement is a satisfying one for all Maltese citizens. He added that the development and implementation of e-government services came about by the joint effort of several people working on the project. It is planned that by 2010, another 30 services will be provided, including the launch of electronic passports and identity cards.
