266 illegal immigrants who reached Maltese shores last June are being repatriated. The repatriation process has already commenced with 70 Egyptian illegal immigrants being flown from Malta to Cairo on a chartered flight on Tuesday.

The group rescued last month consisted of 263 men and three women who were taken to the Armed Forces of Malta's (AFM) maritime base at Haywharf.

This boatload was the largest arriving in Malta in the past months stretching further the Maltese resources to cater for the influx of irregular immigrants.

In a statement, the government said that the speedy repatriation was possible by joint efforts of the Ministry of Foreign affairs and the Parliamentary Secretariat of the Prime Ministers Office.

Coordinated work between the Police and the AFM led to the repatriation of the illegal immigrants in under a week of their arrival in Malta.

The government expressed its gratitude towards the Egyptian government and the Egyptian Embassy in Malta for their immediate cooperation.
