At least three Maltese citizens will be evacuated from Lebanon later this week, in the view of the escalating violent situation in the country which has left around 130 persons dead in six days.
Another three Maltese persons, all Jesuit Priests who reside permanently in Lebanon, are also living with the increasingly precarious situation in the country.
According to Radju Malta the Foreign Ministry confirmed that at least three Maltese citizens, among them a couple visiting Lebanon for a wedding, will be evacuated from the country and brought home in collaboration with the English Embassy later this week.
An English military vessel is expected to rescue the Maltese people between Wednesday and Thursday, along with a number of other citizens from different countries from Lebanon and head towards Cyprus.
On Sunday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the general public aware of Maltese nationals requiring assistance in Lebanon could call telephone numbers 21242191, 79228070 or 99476099.
In turn, BBC reported that on Monday at least 10 Lebanese persons died in an Israeli attack on their vehicles in the south of the country. Seventeen people died elsewhere in Lebanon on the sixth day of Israeli bombardment.
In Israel, two people were hurt in a new rocket attack on the city of Haifa, where eight people died on Sunday. Lebanese guerrillas have been firing hundreds of missiles into Israel.
United Nations Chief Kofi Annan and United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair called for an international force to be sent to Lebanon. The force could "stop the bombardment coming over into Israel and therefore gives Israel a reason to stop its attacks on Hezbollah", Prime Minister Blair said.
