The Malta Resources Authority, acting on behalf of the Government of Malta launched an international Call for Expressions of Interest from interested parties that are capable and willing to undertake offshore wind projects with a final capacity of between 75 and 100 Megawatt (peak) in Maltese territorial waters on a public private partnership basis.
By using this alternative source of energy, the Government aims to reduce Malta’s dependency on oil to generate electricity.
Responses will help the Government of Malta to proceed with the next phase of the process leading to the exploitation of offshore wind energy.
The developer/s who will subsequently be granted authorisation(s) will be expected to finance build, and operate offshore wind farms, with the Government providing the marine site(s) on a concessionary basis and the distribution network operator (Enemalta Corporation) purchasing the energy so produced at agreed fixed tariff(s) and terms.
The Call is being published in the Government Gazette and in the Official Journal of the European Union on Friday 4th August 2006 and submissions will be received until 3rd October 2006.
Copies of the Call may be obtained from the Department of Contracts, Notre Dame Ravelin, Floriana, CMR 02, Malta (Tel.: +356 21220212; Fax.: +356 21247681).
PrimeMinister Lawrence Gonzi had already announced last May that the Government was planning to set up offshore wind farms.
