The Budget 2007 is envisaged by the Government of Malta to be presented towards the end of October. This was confirmed by the Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry for Finance Tonio Fenech towards the closing of the first day of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN).

This could be the last budget before the general elections.

PrimeMinister Lawrence Gonzi and Tonio Fenech are currently participating in the ECOFIN being held in Helsinki. The ECOFIN is composed of the Economics and Finance Ministers of the Member States, as well as Budget Ministers when budgetary issues are discussed.

Tonio Fenech said that last year the budget did not hinder the economic activity that is normally generated during the Christmas period. This is attributed to the fact that the budget was presented earlier than usual in view of the CHOGM last November. Tonio Fenech described this as a positive experience and said that the Government intends to continue on that pattern. He also showed a level of satisfaction with regards the consultation and submission that the Government received and is still receiving vis-a-vis the proposals put forward in the pre-budget document.

The pre-budget document was met with several different views including the Malta Labour Party, Malta Federation of Industry (FOI) and the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise .

Also attending the ECOFIN are Malta’s Permanent Representative in the EU, Richard Cachia Caruana, Central Bank’s Governor Michael C.Bonello and the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Finances Alfred Camilleri.
