On the eve of the opening of the new scholastic year 2006/2007, the ten state-run colleges were announced on Friday by the Minister for Education, Youth and Employment Louis Galea.

The primary and secondary state schools were grouped into the ten colleges. Four new colleges will be introduced together with three other colleges and a network of special schools that started operating last year. Another three remaining colleges will be set up next year.

This was announced by Minister Galea during a meeting with the Headpersons of the Maltese State Schools.

The coordinators of the new colleges were also introduced and announced during the meeting. These are Mr Paul Attard, Ms Bernadette Azzopardi, Mr Joe Buttigieg and Mr Ray Facciol. Director General for Education, Dr Cecilia Borg also addressed the meeting.

Minister Galea said that the new provision on Education that were approved in Parliament last July entered into force as from the 4th September 2006. He added that the new laws provide the setting up of two directorates; the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education and the Directorate for Educational Services; that will carry out the work that was being done up till now by the Education Division.
