Speaking during the opening speech of the Nationalist Party’s General Council on Friday evening, Prime Minister Gonzi said that Malta can now envisage a secure future since the country’s finances are currently also secure. This year the deficit is less than three per cent of the Gross Domestic Product, he said.

The theme for this year’s PN General Council, which is being held over the weekend at the Dolmen Resort in Bugibba, is Ġejjieni fis-Sod (Securing Our Future).

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi also said that the Government wants to improve on the economic growth rate of 2.2 per cent registered last year.

“A year ago, the government continued its programme based on the three pillars of economy, education and the environment,” the Prime Minister said. He explained that the decrease in deficit and the sacrifices asked of the Maltese are now bearing the fruit.

The Prime Minister in fact outlined a number of projects in which progress was made: the MCAST, St Benedict’s College as well as many other schools, the Mater Dei Hospital, the building of twenty kilometres of arterial roads, the pension reform and the 805 million euro funded by the EU.

On Saturday, the PN General Council will be conducting four workshops on the motions which will be discussed over the weekend. The themes include Work, Gozo, the Environment and the participation of Women in Society.
