PrimeMinister Lawrence Gonzi delivered a speech on Friday which closed the first round of discussions on the Budget 2007. Among other issues mentioned, he said that the surcharge should go down to 59.5%.

Dr Gonzi emphasized once again that the budget presented for 2007 is encouraging and aims at positive results in all sectors: education, environment, the economy and commerce and society in general.

He stated that one of the aims of this budget is to turn Malta into a primary financial centre and also an ICT centre in the Mediterranean. He also mentioned how this budget keeps in mind the students, youths, pensioners and persons with disabilities. Dr Gonzi concluded that indeed this is a positive budget and that we should not let anyone discourage us.

The Opposition and Malta Labour Party (MLP) leader Dr. Alfred Sant gave his official reaction on the Budget 2007 on Wednesday.

In turn, discussions in Parliament on each Ministry’s vote commence next Monday.
