On Saturday, the Hon Anton Tabone, Speaker of the House of Representatives will start his official visit to Cyprus which will last until 1st November. Mr Speaker has been invited to Cyprus by the Hon. Dimitris Christofias, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and is being accompanied by the Hon. Mr Franco Galea, Hon Mr Joe Mizzi and Mr Joe Mangion, Diplomatic Officer at the Speaker’s Secretariat.
Diplomatic relations between Malta and Cyprus were established in 1972. Since then, both countries have enjoyed a close and friendly relationship, culminating in last year’s visit to Malta by H.E. Tassos Papadopoulos, the President of the Republic of Cyprus.
Malta and Cyprus are two Mediterranean countries, both active members in the Commonwealth and the European Union. Parliamentary delegations of both sides have been participating and cooperating closely in various international fora. Mr Tabone’s visit to Cyprus will consolidate further the already excellent relations between the parliamentary institutions in both countries and identify new areas of cooperation both at the bilateral and multilateral level.
Mr Tabone’s visit to Cyprus will include meetings with Mr Christofias, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, and Mr Yiorgos Lillikas, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr Tabone will be received by Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, the President of Cyprus and will call upon Mr Michael Zampelas, the Mayor of Nicosia, and Mr Yiannakis Skordis, Mayor of Famagusta.
