The compilation of evidence against 44-year-old Mario Camilleri, also known as L-Imnieħru, began on Wednesday, after the inmate allegedly threatened Malta Labour Party (MLP) Members of Parliament (MPs) Anglu Farrugia and Jose Herrera.

The Kordin Corrective Facility inmate allegedly made threatening telephone calls to Anglu Farrugia from prison, then verbally threatened Jose’ Herrera in court the subsequent day. Mario Camilleri has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The threats were allegedly made between 29th October and 30th October 2006.

MP Anglu Farrugia said that he received a telephone call after speaking of a tender for the cleaning of the Court of Justice, which was given by the government to a company owned by the inmate’s family. The inmate allegedly threatened the MP over the telephone, warning him not to speak of the affair anymore.

In turn, while testifying MP Jose Herrera said that L-Imnieħru threatened him while the he made his way outside of court. The MP further said that he held nothing against Camilleri family and that he only felt angered because it seems as if the parliamentary question is being blamed for the termination of the cleaning contract. MP Herrera also stated that he wishes to take the matter no further.

Inspector Carmelo Magri also took the witness stand. He stated that when he asked l-Imnieħru if he had effectively spoke to both MPs, the inmate did not deny that he had, however he did not admit to threatening them.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano presided over the court.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Chris Pullicino. Lawyer Franco Debono is appearing for the accused. The compilation of evidence is expected to continue in the upcoming weeks.
