SmartCity techno-park will effectively be opened in Malta, after a brief spell of uncertainty earlier during the month when Minister for Investments and Information Technology Dr. Austin Gatt said that Malta could withdraw from the project should talks continue without an agreement.

According to Gulfnews, TECOM Investment and Sama Dubai, both members of Dubai Holding, will launch SmartCity by investing in Malta, as well as Kochi, India. Fareed Abdul Rahman, executive director of TECOM International said that a formal announcement on the launch of SmartCity will be made next month.

He further told Gulfnews that "The new company will draw synergies from both the entities that will help us to successfully develop a network of hi-tech parks in various regions. We are going to officially sign up two smart cities in Malta and Kochi in India. However, we have four more in the pipeline in South Asia and Africa."

Malta was not alone when facing uncertainty vis-à-vis the manifest of the project. SmartCity plans ran into trouble in recent months as the new Indian government raised certain issues to block the project.
